Liza H. Gold, MD is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and President Elect of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. She has authored and edited multiple psychiatric texts, including the forthcoming 3rd edition of the American Psychiatric Association Textbook of Suicide Risk Assessment and Management (2020), the American Psychiatric Association Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry (2018), and Gun Violence and Mental Illness (2016). She has written and lectured on the subjects of firearms and suicide as well as the relationship between mental illness and gun violence. Dr. Gold is a member of the Consortium for Risk-Based Firearm Policy, which is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy Research and the Education Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.
Dr. Gold has also worked for the past several years to push the American Psychiatric Association to align campaign contributions from the APA PAC with its stated positions on gun violence by not contributing to elected officials who receive high grades and support from the gun lobby including the National Rifle Association. She published a piece about this issue in Psychiatric Times on November 25, 2019, entitled, “Gun Violence and Medical Professional Organizations: Political Business as Usual?”
