September is suicide prevention month. Here is a message from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: "Firearms are involved in more than half of all suicides in the U.S and, suicides account for over half of all firearm deaths in the U.S. According to 2023 CDC data, 55% of all suicides involved a gun and 58% of all gun related deaths were suicides. Many firearm owners are unaware that suicide is often preventable and there are steps that can be taken to prevent firearm suicide. In addition to funding suicide prevention research and advocating for public policies that prevent firearm suicide, AFSP also works to provide evidence informed suicide prevention education to firearm owners by making programs and resources available to firearms retailers, shooting range owners, and individual firearm owners to promote secure firearm storage, seeking help for mental health, recognizing the warning signs of suicide and providing resources to support during a crisis.
